How Aromatherapy can help Mindfulness and Meditation
In our fast-paced world, finding moments of tranquility and mindfulness is becoming increasingly essential. The practice of meditation is swiftly gaining popularity, thanks in part to user-friendly apps like Headspace and Calm. In fact, recent reports indicate that a growing 8 percent of US adults now engage in meditation. This ancient practice is no longer confined to monasteries; it's finding its place in schools, workplaces, hospitals, and even the homes of artists and stay-at-home parents.
Meditation yields an array of benefits that can transform our daily lives:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved focus and memory
- Enhanced emotional equilibrium
- Increased positivity
- Better quality sleep
- Greater self-compassion
Who wouldn't want a piece of that action, right?
At its core, meditation trains the brain to create space and gain perspective. This process prevents us from getting trapped in recurring thoughts and emotions. Our thoughts influence our emotions, but emotions also impact our thoughts significantly. Read more about the Key Elements of a Healthy Mind.
Dr. Sara Lazar, a Harvard Neuroscientist, has conducted intriguing research on meditation and its impact on brain structure. She's authored over 40 studies on the subject, with one revealing fascinating changes in the brain during meditation. Notably, the brain processes less information during meditation. Beta waves, associated with information processing, decrease. MRI scans pinpoint where and how beta waves decrease the most, as evident in this image:
Meditation isn't about silencing your thoughts. It's about observing them and letting them go, focusing on the present moment, enhancing resilience, and nurturing compassion for yourself and others.
"Essential oils can be helpful to centre, ground and focus the mind as well as reduce negative self-talk." - Andy Puddicombe, Founder of Headspace.
Meditation fosters self-awareness, enabling us to better understand our thoughts and emotions. It empowers us to cultivate kindness towards ourselves and those around us.
With the average person having 20,000-50,000 daily thoughts, achieving inner peace can be a challenge. The constant stream of thoughts hinders moments of tranquility.
Essential oils and meditation
The addition of essential oils to my meditation practice has been transformative. These oils enhance relaxation, allowing me to embrace moments of solitude without guilt or distraction. I savour the present and remain engaged without my thoughts wandering.
Aromas wield a powerful influence on the limbic system, making essential oils invaluable for grounding, focusing the mind, and curbing negative self-talk.
A variety of essential oils enhance meditation:
- Frankincense
- Sandalwood
- Neroli
- Vetiver
- Palo Santo
- Cedarwood
- Lavender
- Ylang Ylang
- Hinoki
Their scents anchor us in the present moment, much like incense does for Buddhist monks.
For guided meditation, I turn to the Calm app. Their diverse themes and courses cater to various preferences, and I find it profoundly fulfilling.
